This Sunday is the day we pay homage to all mothers and their influence in our society. It is a festival that is celebrated all over the world, although on different dates.
Historically Mothers Day was first celebrated in Ancient Greece where they honoured the Goddess Rea, mother of Hades, Zeus and Poseidon. Although the modern day versión dates from the 15th Century when the english started to celebrated Mothering Sunday at the beginning of Lent and later changed to the fourth sunday of Lent.
In the United Stated it was started in 1873 when a group of north american women met up in different cities to commemorate this day. But it was not until 12th May 1907, when Professor Ana Jarvis, two years after the death of her mother, wanted to commemorate it and organised a Mothers Day for this purpose. It was from this date that the custom began to expand and along with the proclamation of Womens Rights and Freedom which was obtained in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared that the second sunday of May would become known as the International Mother´s Day.
It is a special day for family celebration and for surprising that person who for you is someone special, the person who gave you life and who has always done so much for you.
